Animating "roots"

Hello,

Would anyone know how I could animate these roots in After Effects? I've tried to use the trim paths option but that doesn't seem to work (I'm assuming because of the gradient I've applied) but I might also be using it wrong. Is there any other way I could animate the roots to give an effect as if they were growing deeper?

Look up any "logo reveal", "animate handwriting" or "write on" tutorial on YouTube and learn how to use track mattes, the Stroke and Write-On effects, simply linear wipes, old-fashioned masks and all that stuff. There's literally millions of those tutorials.
