For anything beyond that you have to provide actual info about your composition, your computer, preview settings and so on.

Thanks for sharing the details, Emma.

Your computer is not meeting the minimum system requirements for After Effects and that will hit the performance. Other than that, Video is not included in the preview (only audio is). Go to the Preview panel and highlight the eye icon to enable video preview.

Tips:

  • After Effects will preview in real-time only when the Timeline is cached (cached frames are represented by a green line in the Timeline).
  • Lower the preview resolution since your machine is underpowered.
