Auto-select After Effects 2026

Hi all,

 

Since the latest version of After Effects, I’ve been experiencing an issue when working with layers.

When I select a layer in the timeline panel and then try to move it manually in the Composition panel, it doesn’t move the correct layer. Instead, After Effects seems to switch the selection in the timeline to a completely different layer—almost as if an “auto-select” option is enabled.

I have already searched extensively online and checked all possible settings, but I cannot find any auto-selection option that could be causing this.

When I open older projects that were saved in a previous version of After Effects, this issue does not occur.

Has anyone experienced this before, or does anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks for reaching out. What's the exact version of After Effects that you are using? What are your system specifications (CPU, GPU, RAM, OS version)? Do you mind sharing a screen recording of the issue? It'll help us better understand the problem. Also, can you check if it happens in a specific project or in all of them? In the meantime, try running After Effects in Safe Mode with third-party plug-ins disabled.
