Question

Automatically generating a "low poly stroke" in After Effects?

Hey!
I'm working on a AE template for video ads. I'm looking for a way to automate this kind of low-poly / hand-clicked rough stroke, as if someone hastily keyed something out by hand (see attachemend). I've tried stroke + turbulent displacement, but that's too smooth. Any ideas how to achieve this effect? Are there any plugins maybe? Doesn't have to be free.

This has to be done in AE, and needs to be procedural, to speed up the workflow. Just drop the image in a sub comp and AE does the rest.

Thanks for your recommendations!

This is quite rough, but if you don't have the money for plexus - which would also be required by whoever is rendering, then these settings could work with a bit of tweaking:

Basically, Card Dance rotates and scales sections of the image, which are then filled in white and CC Composite brings back the original.

The Plexus plug-in is your friend. It can simplify mask shapes in this polygonal fashion. Of course you'll still have to actually create a mask with an auto-trace at least, but that's definitely better than masking over and over again and could even be animated.
