Question

Background color not exporting

I’m having a problem where AE is ignoring the background color on export, and exporting everything with a black background. It also then resets the comp background color to black.

It’s an easy fix to just throw a white background layer in every comp, as I don’t need an alpha channel, but that’s a dumb fix, and I’m wondering if there’s something I’m not understanding?

I’ve been using AE for 26 years now and never encountered this before -However,  I did get a new macbook around the same time as I ran into this, which is also right around the time AE 26 came out.

Any ideas would be helpful, I hate little unexplained things like this 🎱

Thanks for that - it’s absolutely crazy that I’ve never known this. Ever since covid I am working in a completely different industry, in a completely different way, but that is a poor excuse.

Still, that doesn’t explain why my background color reverts to black every time I export anything, and I wish that didn’t happen

Hey, thanks for following up! The background color resetting in Composition Settings is worth looking into separately.

Could you share your exact AE and macOS versions, and whether you’re exporting through AE’s Render Queue or Media Encoder? Does the color also reset in a new project with a simple comp?

A short screen recording showing the setting before and after export would help us understand what’s happening.

    Thanks,
    Nishu

You're not missing a setting — this is how After Effects works. The Background Color in Composition Settings doesn't create any actual pixels; it only colours the transparent area in the Composition panel. When you render without an alpha channel, those transparent pixels come out black, which is why your chosen background colour disappears.

The solid you've been adding is actually the correct solution, not a workaround — Adobe's own docs say the same: to preserve a background colour, create a solid-colour layer to use as the background layer. So Layer > New > Solid in your colour, at the bottom of the layer stack, is the way to go:
