Question

Best way to sync Spotify-style music beats with animations in After Effects?

Hi everyone,

I'm working on a motion graphics project that uses music as the background, and I want the text animations and transitions to sync naturally with the beat.

For those who create music visualizers or audio-reactive animations in After Effects, what's your preferred workflow for detecting beats and matching keyframes to the music? Do you use the built-in Convert Audio to Keyframes feature, plugins, or manual keyframing?

I'm also curious how you handle music tracks from streaming services like Spotify, since the audio may not be available as a directly editable file. Is it better to use a properly licensed local audio file for this kind of project?

I'd appreciate any practical tips, especially for keeping the animation smooth without spending hours adjusting every keyframe.

Hi! The built-in workflow covers most of this — no plug-ins needed:

    1. Work from a local audio file. After Effects can only import actual files (WAV, MP3, etc.), and streaming services like Spotify don't provide an editable file, so use a properly licensed local copy — exactly as you suspected. WAV is the safer choice, since MP3 encoding can add a tiny offset at the very start that throws the sync off slightly.

    2. Detect the levels automatically: select the audio layer and choose Animation > Keyframe Assistant > Convert Audio to Keyframes. This creates an “Audio Amplitude” layer with keyframes for the audio levels.

    3. Let an expression drive the animation instead of keyframing by hand: Alt-click (Windows) / Option-click (Mac) the stopwatch of a property like Scale or Opacity, and pick-whip it to the Audio Amplitude layer's “Both Channels” slider, mapping it to the range you want (the linear() function is handy for this). The animation then follows the music on its own.

    4. For specific accents, mark the beats manually: while previewing the audio, press * on the numeric keypad to drop a layer marker on each beat, then snap your keyframes or layer start points to those markers. Pressing LL shows the audio waveform in the Timeline, which helps spot the transients.

Tip for smoothness: add a little smoothing in the expression (for example with smooth()) so the hits feel musical rather than mechanical.

    Hope that helps!
