best way to wrap an image around a 3d shape?

I've spent the morning on the forums and read many posts from illustrator, after effects and cinema 4d lite. I need to take an image and wrap it around the front of a hexagon and import it to after effects for a simple animation.

should I be researching cinema 4d lite projections, or 3d images in after effects?

illustrator 3d/bevel and extrude doesn't work because it places an image on top of a shape; I want to "skin" a 3d object with an image. Photoshop 3d has the same effect by placing my image on the front a box.

please point me at the starting tutorial, what's step 1? thanks.

You have 2 options:

1) Use the cc sphere effect in after effects, it will wrap an image around a sphere if you can use a sphere instead of a hexagon.

2) If you must use a hexagon or other type shape than a sphere, then open cinema 4d (or 4D lite) where you can use an image as a new texture.  Create a new shape, then open an image file and drag the new texture on to the shape.

This isn't a job for After Effects or one of the plugins.  This is a job for a real 3D application.
