Blacks look gray

When I import illustrator files into AE the blacks are showing up gray. I've changed the document color settings but no changes?

It's not clear what you are saying since you do not offer up any actual info about color settings, both in AE and AI. You need to be much more specific and explain those critical details on color modes, color profiles, your project color settings and so on along with providing at least some basic system information.
