Blank Composition and Text Panel

So I'm pretty new to AE, and have been trying all sorts of tutorials to get caught up to speed, but today I had a weird thing happen. For whatever reason, when I went to rotoscope one of my layers, as soon as I returned to the main composition view, the screen went blank. The only way I can see anything is if I double-click on a particular layer, except if I select the text layer, then it goes blank again. I was trying to rotoscope the parrot so I could put a word behind it, but the word won't show up. Any idea what's happening?
