Question

Bug with using track matte in After Effects.

In After Effects, when using a lower layer as a track matte for an upper layer, if the lower layer is also visible, a stray edge (or matte line) will inevitably appear in the composition.

This will significantly cause issues with what I see in the viewport.

he green edge in the image below should not be visible. I suspect this may be caused by sub-pixels of the matte not being fully covered by the upper layer.

    Hi there,

Sorry for the delayed response and thanks for the report and the screenshots. The thin edge you're seeing is most likely caused by anti-aliased sub-pixels along the matte boundary. This is expected compositing behaviour rather than a bug.

    You can try:
Apply a Simple Choker or Matte Choker effect to the matte layer to pull the matte edge slightly inward and eliminate the fringe.

Let me know how it goes. Moving this thread from Bugs to Questions for troubleshooting.

    Thanks,

    Nishu

I’ve realized I was mistaken; using the same masking method in Photoshop yields a clean result without any outline. If I overlay an image without transparency onto a mask that has transparency, the color of the mask itself should be covered up, right? Please try using other software, such as Photoshop.

    Thanks for getting back, @Bubbly_yogi8160

I talked to the product team about it. Here’s what they suggest:

This is normal compositing behavior when you composite two identical alpha channels exactly atop each other, or matte a channel with an identical channel (edited)

In this case the edge is worse because it is doubly-matted. original alpha channel is then masked by matte channel which is then matted again with original

Masks in Photoshop work differently and they can’t be compared with the Track Matte.

If you want to get rid off that edge, the better way is for the top layer to be a fully opaque rectangular (red) which is then cut by the matte layer (check out the screenshot).

    Hope it helps.

    Thanks,

    Nishu
