C4D-enabled 3D renders failing on fresh install M1 Max studio

I basically can't make it through rendering a 25 second comp with C4D 3d enabled. No problems ram previewing, but renders are stalling  - progress bar stops, system resource useage plumets, no crash or save dialogue boxes.... I have to force quit each time (window does indicate the app is "not responding") as stopping the render has no effect.

This is a BRAND NEW mac studio M1 Max 32core Gfx and 64gb RAM. One week old, everything is downloaded fresh and up to date

I see the suggestion in other threads to update Cinema 4D but I don't own it. Am I going to be screwed trying use that renderer in AE without the standalone application?

Is there anything I can try to get renders through? Are other people having any luck or is this just early and buggy? There's no way I can rely on this for final renders if it's already this troublesome at half res (1080p)

I did kill everything else running after the first bunch of crashes, photoshop WAS running before that (as it usually is when I'm in AE). I will try rendering through ME and see if that's any different. Thanks for the reply (just seeing this - didn't get the alert)
