Camera's Orientation Acting Weird During Animation

Hello,

As you can see in the attached screenshots, I have 4 different photos around the center and one photo below the center. I have a camera pointed downwards approaching the center. However, during the animation, the camera's Z's orientation (not the actual parameter) is constantly changing during the whole animation.

Why is this happening and how to fix it?

It's called gimbal lock and has to do with that old Euler vs. Quarternion rotations thing where after a bunch of rotations the local axes are lined up wrongly. Using exact 90 degree steps fits this scenario all too well. You can look it up on Wikipedia. In your case you will need to work with parenting to decouple the individual rotations or construct a custom up-vector with an expression to keep things oriented properly.

Thank you about enlightening me about the gimbal lock concept. My level of skill in After Effects is still between basic and intermediate. So bear with me.

What I understood is that I need to solve the problem by parenting the camera to a null object and go from there. Regarding the other solution, I didn't quite understood what to do. The only thing I know that include the word "vector" are the vector shapes.

By the way, I just changed the x coordinates of the camera by 1 unit to avoid a 90 degree angle with the point of interest. The camera views stays the same and the problem is fixed. But still, it's good to learn other techniques.

When uploading pics you might want to choose the "insert photos" option and simply upload the photos from your drive.  I for one do not want to (and will not) download anything to my computer
