Question

Can after effects import vector files from illustrator?

I have a large amount of vector files that i mst animate to create a batch of weather icons. The original designer created these in after effects as vector line art in illustrator. I have to take all these (over 120) and create animations from these. The document contains each icon as an artboard. So that helps on export as an eps or svg, however AE will only import the eps as an image which prevent me from animating a stroke along the path of the icons, and svg won't import at all. Am I missing something or is there a way to bring these illustrator artboard layers in as vector based masks without copy/pasting them individually. The copy paste doesn't work since the layers are all differnet sizes and won't paste into position correctly... and it's just time consuming.

After Effects will only import the top artboard. You are going to have to reorganize your artwork into layers and arrange them all on one artboard. If the shapes have no raster effects, gradient fills, or some types of masks on them then you can convert vector layers to shape layers and maintain the look. If the artwork is complicated this may not always work. You also have the option when saving an Illustrator file to export each artboard as a separate AI file.

We need to see the structure of your AI file including layers, artboards, effects and the like to give you specific instructions.
