Can't drag imported file from project to composition

When I import a file it shows up in my project file but I cannot drag it into the composition.

    we need more detail to be able to help.

    how are you creating the composition? where are you dragging the file too (comp window / timeline)? what kind of file is being imported? which version of After Effects are you using?
