Can't Easily Change Path via Control Points in Shape Layer

So I'm new to AE but everytime I try to keyframe and change the path of a shape layer, it makes me move position, which I don't want. It doesn't allow me to easily click on the control points and move the control points. I try to click alt, shift or ctrl in case there's a trick but nothing. It's like 50/50 that I'm able to click on a control point to move it and keyframe it. What am I missing?

Just to clarify. In Adobe Illustrator, which I mainly use, there is a tool called Direct Selection (which controls the points) and a general Selection tool (which controls size, rotation...etc.) but there is nothing like a Direct Selection tool in After Effects. I've seen something where you can create Null objects and link it to the specific path but how exactly do you change the bezier handles then? And if this isn't easily accessible, why am I able to still do it 50/50? It seems hard to find a answer on Google. All I find is things about anchor points, which I don't want. I want to manipulate control points?
