How do you make a sphere with the 3d effect without using perspective: cc Sphere since that does not appear 3d and is fake 3d with lighting?

This doesent seem like a good way for me to make a 3d ball and stick model of a molecule/crystalline structure so ther has to be another way. maybe somehow being able to round out the cylinder ?

Yeah.  After Effects is not a 3D program.  There's a couple of plugins for that can do it like  Element 3D or Stardust.  If you're looking for the path of least resistence go with the plug-ins because going with a true 3D app means EVERYTHING has to be done in that app. Modeling, Texturing, Camera, Lighting & Animation.  You need to create a finished shot, render it out to a sequence and then bring into After Effects to compositite it ino your scene.  It's not somethin you're going to be able do without weeks or even months of learning the various modules common to 3d applications that'll be necessary.

You could save an .obj file but the only way to bring that into AE is via one of the 3D plugins. So Element 3D I think is $199 That's probably the cheapest way.  Stardust is $250? $299 maybe?  And alot more powerful than Element and Easier to use, I think,

If you really need more complex stuff, then AE is not the right tool for you. It's as simple as that. Time to learn a 3D program.
