CANNOT create shape from layer

I am going crazy.

I have a simple vector rectangle as an .ai file.  It is literally just a orange rectangle outline, this is a proof of concept as my actual image is a complex shape outline.

I imported this simple rectangle outline into AE. It looks fine. I am trying to trace path animate it. When I convert it to a shape layer, all I get is a gray box.

I am at a loss for what to do. Am I going to seriously have to waste a huge amount of time and recreate every asset I made for this in after effects itself so it is usable? How is this an efficient workflow??

rather than blindly diving into this

I've been using the adobe suite of products since 2004 when Macromedia Fireworks and Flash weren't yet absorbed into the Adobe brand, used it for my job for six years in the early 2010's, and this is a custom workstation purpose-built for the Adobe suite, but please continue making blind assumptions and go off.

I will never post here again; your absolute condescension and holier-than-thou attitude is unwarranted and inappropriate.  Take that chip off your shoulder and shove it where the sun does not shine.

It is not, in fact, CMYK color mode. It is RGB.  I spent over 7 hours going through official documentation, youtube videos, and trawling this forum. There is nothing wrong with the color fill, it is not using spot color.

Imagine driving off an experienced 20-year user because you wanted to posture. Incredible.

It's in the wrong color mode or you used an unsupported fill like a spot color. You may want to read the online help on what's actually supported rather than blindly diving into this.
