Question

Changing Black Backdrop

Hello

I come from the world of Photoshop where i am used to having many selection tools like the Magic Wand and others.

I have a video of a model with a black cloth backdrop. I would like to use After Effect to select the black backdrop and change the color by darkening the black.

How can i do this in After Effects without impacting the other parts of the image?

Thank you.

Duplicate the layer in the timelien (Ctrl+D), apply e.g. a Levels effect to the top duplicate and adjust the ranges until you have a clean B&W image, then on the bottom layer assign the top duplicate as a Luma Matte.

Could be as simple as generating a luma matte akin to how you'd do it in PS using channel operation. In AE you'd use the Channel Combiner and let it generate transparency based on luminance or similar. Of course just liek PS you may need to use multiple duplicate layers for individual areas and on top of it you may still need additional masking and refinement with other effects. Anyway, show us an image/ screenshot and we can more specifically tell you whjat the best approach might be.

Thx for the help. It would be just a person in front of a black backdrop. I would like to make the backdrop completely black. I saw someone do it with a simple click or 2 a nd it took 30 seconds. I know you can use a magic wand or similar in PS. Not sure if there is an equivalent in AE or Premiere pro.

thank you.

You may want to use Rotobrush on this.

Here's how.
