Choppy audio during preview

The preview audio is consistently choppy when I put the preview panel on my external monitor. It sounds like the files are caching but the video playback isn't choppy at all. Sometimes when I'm starting a project, the audio will be weird like this, but once I edit the video for a while it's fine. It happens at least once every project. I'm no pro at this so at this point I really have no idea how to fix it. When I disable the video playback under the preview panel, the audio is fine, and it's also fine when I use the default layout for ae and not the external monitor. The audio is fine once rendered.

OS: Windows 10 pro

I'm using a 15-inch Surface Book 2; with an Intel Core i7- 8650u, 16GB of RAM, NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1060, 1TB SSD; and the external monitor is a dell S2316H.
