Color picker says anything outside my after effects window is black.

Trying to use the color picker to pick from files outside of my after effects window, and it automatically picks black as soon as I go outside AE. Tried pulling from photoshop, preview, etc and it always defaults to black. Tried 8, 16, 32 bit and several working spaces and it doesn't fix.
