Color range color picker disappears - Help!

I am trying to select a color from a composition for the Color Range effect.  However, the color picker icon disappears when I navigate from the Effect Controls view to the primary Composition/Layers view.  If I click a color in the primary view, nothing happens.  However, if I instead click the blank white adjustment layer in the Color Range preview, it actually selects a color.  I'd like to use something other than the tiny white box or manually entering RGB values...  I've restarted my machine and cleared all caches.  Any idea what's happening here?  I'm on AE 17.5.1.
