Composition Preview not rendering/loading

Hey, I was in the middle of fixing some old compositions from 2019. I got through four with no problem, but then I wanted to fix something in the first composition I worked on and went back the preview stopped working. It doesn't work for any of the compositions, in any of the work spaces.

 

I'm on a Dell XPS 15 which is pretty buggy to start with but is updated, and I've tried ending all tasks, updating adobe and my driver and restarting. I've done a purge clearing all caches and memories, and following youtube suggestions deleted the AE folder in my documents and user roaming app data. This helped to the extent it allowed me to preview a simple solid in a test project, but when i tried to open the one I need it crashed again.

The composition is there and I can delete elements of it, but no preview. I tried rendering the composition for an export and this doesnt work either, pressing space bar or 0 shows no response.

 

I'm kind of a noob with this stuff and I'm really in need of help, I just need to delete these two layers and I'm done. If anyone has any suggestions at all or any experience with this, please let me know

Could you share your system specifications (CPU, GPU, RAM, OS)? Also, a screenshot of what you see in After Effects? It'll help us to understand the issue better.

Did you ever get a response for this? I am having the same issue on a very similar spec machine (also Dell XPS).

I have trawled through many discussions describing similar issues where the Composition window or the Layer window just does not display anything despite comps/layers being active, regardless of whether I am opening an old project or starting a new one.

I have already tried:

  • turning off hardware acceleration
  • clearing my cache
  • clearing my settings
  • deleting localappdata folder
  • reverting to earlier versions of After Effects.

Any help would be appreciated.
