Copying a composition without effecting the original

Can I save a composition as a different name, then import the saved composition within the original file it was created in, so I can modify for more text without it changing the original composition in the file?

Or is there a better method for duplicating a composition as a separate from its original?

I assume what you are doing is duplicating a comp layer.

Duplicate the composition in the Project panel, not froma layer on the Timeline.

When you duplicate a comp in the Project panel you are creating a new master comp which is separate from the original. You can change whatever you want in this copy without havign any effect on the original comp.

If you duplicate a comp layer what you are doing is making a new reference to teh original comp.
