Crawling mycelium visual FX

I'm new to Adobe After Effects. Are there any tutorials that would help me take filmed footage of a skull in the earth, and add VFX of white mycelium branching over the surface of the soil and over the skull?

It's for an opening sequence of a trailer I'm doing for my Horror Feature, plus it's part of my PhD. So I have a tiny budget to pay a little something for someone who wants to do the VFX in return for a screen credit and something very cool for their portfolio!

But if not, then I need to learn to do it myself, so any suggestions of which tutorials I should focus on, would be amazing, thank you!
