Create overlay with fog and masks - probably simple question

Hi,

Today I learned that video editing and VFX is really effin difficult. What I didn't learn was a way to create the following: I want to create an overlay for a short film of mine. It shall serve as a background for text (i.e. a person's name). I am imagining a rectangle that is filled with blurred fog. I already created the fog via turbulent displace effect (https://www.rocketstock.com/blog/how-to-create-realistic-fog-in-after-effects/). However I can't find out for the life of me how to limit that fog only to the area of a rectangle. How can such a simple thing be so complicated? If I add another (rectangular) mask to my original fog layer it will of course have the turbulent displacement effedct applied to it too... How do I do that?

Many thanks in advance

Peter

Turbulent Displace will always maintain layer size unless you select the resize layer option. You could resize the layer to get your rectangle smaller than the comp. The other option would be to add a layer to use as a track matte. I would probably just create a shape layer above the Fog layer and select Alpha Matte to create my rectangle. The Track Matte solution would give you a lot more options.
