Cropping/Keying Out A Moving Animation

I currently have a video that contains an animated character making a simple moving animation. I would like to know how I can crop out just the character and the animation without any background.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated

Are you planning to work on this in After Effects?

What does the background look like?

If it's a simple color, you might be able to use what's called a "chroma key". If not, maybe a difference key (if you can recreate the background without the character. If all else fails, you may have to rotoscope.

Alternatively, can you get whoever made the original animation to give you a video file with an alpha channel? That'd make all of this unneeded.
