Current Time Indicator (CTI) jumps forward when returning to parent comp

Hi,

I'm using AE 17.5.1 (Build 47) on an iMac running Catalina 10.15.7. I have a project using nested comps. Usually when going into the nested comps the CTI tracks the proper frame relative to the parent comp. However, I am experiencing a bizarre behaviour and don't know if there's a setting I'm missing, or if it possibly a bug.

Essentially, when I enter a nested comp, the CTI lands at the correct frame. But when I return to the parent comp, the CTI jumps forward 353 frames for some reason. When I go back into the child comp, the CTI lands at the right place, but when I go back to the parent comp it jumps forward another 353 frames.

Test:
  • Starting from Main_Comp: CTI at 00000
  • Enter Child_Comp_1:  CTI at 00000 (OK)
  • Return to Main_Comp (Close Child_Comp_1): CTI now at 00353 (!)
  • Re-enter Child_Comp_1: CTI at 00353 (OK)
  • Return to Main_Comp (Close Child_Comp_1): CTI now at 00706 (!)
  • Re-enter Child_Comp_1: CTI at 00706 (OK)
  • Return to Main_Comp (Close Child_Comp_1): CTI now at 01059 (!)
  • Re-enter Child_Comp_1: CTI at 01059 (OK)

There is no time-remapping being used, and the child comp starts at frame 0 of the main comp.

Interestingly, additional levels of child comps behave properly. It's just the main comp and first child experiencing this behaviou.

Any ideas if I'm missing something or what I can try?

Thank you for any suggestions.

Do you have any other duplicate of this composition in your timeline that is shifted in time?

Hi Ali,

Yes, that's exactly what the problem was! I didn't realize the copies of the comp on the main timeline were offset, which would of course cause the time synchronization to receive conflicting information.

Thanks for responding.

Hi Mylenium,

Thank you for the quick reply and suggestions. I've just confirmed that it only happens with one particular comp. The playhead behaves as expected for all the other comps in the project. (There are many)

Based on your response, here's what I've tried:

  • Confirmed that "Synchronize Time of all Related Items" is checked.
  • Tried unchecking it, restarting After Effects, then rechecking it and restarting again. No effect.
  • Flushed all caches, restarted After Effects. No effect.
  • Confirmed that comp settings for main comp, nested comp and preview settings are all 24 frames per second. Don't see anything to test there.
  • Looked for expressions using pt_ExpressEdit 2 by Paul Tuersley related to these comps. Couldn't find anything.

Since it is only related to one comp; do you have any other ideas where I might look?

Thanks again!

Scott

Well, is the "Synchronize time across comps" option in the prefs actualyl enabled (it should be by default)? Are there any expressions involving time anywhere? Have you flushed the caches? do the preview settings match the comp settings? I'm willing to bet that this is technically correct, but may be triggered by a mismatch in something that affects how framerates are calculated and you may just miss a switch/ setting somewhere.
