Deterioration in Screen Recording Videos (.mov files) in After Effects

The screen recordings I recorded with QuickTime look distorted in After Effects. What is the cause and solution for this?

Screen recording tools use all sorts of dirty tricks to keep up with data rates and low file sizes. Such files typically need to be converted/ transcoded in external tools before being used in AE to get a constant frame rate and such.
