Do I need to buy illustrator or another product to be able to use after effects, or is it a stand alone product?

    It is a stand alone product. You can download the free trial or buy the subscription here: Creative Cloud pricing and membership plans | Adobe Creative Cloud

    Under the single app plan select After Effects and follow the prompts. If you are a student with a valid ID you can purchase all of the apps for the same price as an individual app.

    No. You don't need to buy Illustrator for learning After Effects.
