Does After-effects recognise photoshop smart layers?

Does after-effects recognise photoshop smart layers linked from a PSD? I am not sure if there are any advantages, unlike a vector such as AI or EPS, which is continuous rasterization? If there is data seen by AE, will the app slow down when rendering?

Long and short: No. AE only sees the rasterized layer data and nothing more.
