When I drag two bars in the timeline entire bar is moving. Some times only extension takes place. How to decide whether I need extension or moving bar.

See this Demo video. Entire bar moves key frames as well. Edge moves bar only.

You need to understand the basics of After Effects. A move operation moves the keyframes as you move the layer. Trim operations only lengthen or shorten the length of the layer and it does not affect keyframe position in any way. Two different command for tow different operations.

Example 1: you want to maintain an animation in the exactly same place as you have it right now but you want the layer to start earlier. TRIM

Example 2: You want the animation to start earlier in your composition, then MOVE.

You can see in this video at certain point layers end point is moving away from the right side edge. When will it take place?

Of course I see it. You are MOVING the layer. What happens is that layer's end is out of the boundaries of your timeline. This is why you think you are trimming. Moving the layer to the left brings back the layer's out point inside the timeline panel. If you open the IN/OUT/DURATION/STRETCH panel in the timeline window you will see that you are not modifying the layer's duration, that is, you are moving the layer.

If you place the cursor OVER the layers, you will move the layers. If you put. the cursor OVER THE EDGE of the layers then you will trim them.

This is another option but some times event though if I place the cursor on the bar, bar get trimed.

It depends on how close to the edge you place the cursor. It is a normal behavior in After Effects. If you get the trim option move slightly to the right.
