Dynamic Link - AE>PP with audio - Animation Workflow.

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum but I thought it would be best placed here as the issue stems from an animation workflow starting in After Effects.

Currently, we create artwork in Illustrator and open it in After Effects. This is then animated in After Effects with basic sound FX added into the comp so the animation and audio are in sync. For broadcast purposes, we need our final export for the animation to come out of Premiere. For this we currently export the comp from After Effects and place it onto a timeline in Premiere then re-export.

Obviously this end part of the workflow feels unnecessary with the availability of dynamic linking. I also feel that it may be easier to add sound FX into the Premiere file if it is able to link back to After Effects.

Overall:

We would like to link the visual comp from AE to PP, and the audio from PP to AE. After quite a bit of testing and research, I am not entirely sure this is at all possible and wondered if anyone had any idea how to create a workflow in this way if it is?

Thanks in advance, Katie.

No, you cannot create cyclic dependencies with DynamicLink. It's always a one-way road, regardless of where you start out. If you want to establish such a workflow, you would merely create a reference track in Premiere, then load that up in AE via DL, while keeping the actual animation separate/ independent from it. This stuff can contain markers, though this feature tends to be flaky and unreliable. You may also wish to use a visually burned in timecode in your reference cut and e.g. cue cards/ titles/ audio countdowns to further facilitate the process. Regardless, you won't be able to seamlessly integrate the audio mix. One thing always has to come first. Not an issue, though. Even on movies the audio mix is done as a separate step and any temp audio tracks are merely that - a preliminary reference.

Thankyou for your reply, I had a feeling this would be the case but thought it would be worth asking.
What you mentioned about reference tracks was very helpful, I will take a look into that now!

Thanks, Katie.
