Question

Effect keeps starting at beginning, even though I have start and end keyframes later

I'm struggling to learn AE and having trouble with what would seem to be the simplest tasks. I'm trying to animate some text that is in front of a waving flag, and applying the Wave Warp effect. I have defined a starting keyframe at 4s and an ending point at 5s (the total length of the composition). But every time I preview it the waving occurs throughout the entire 5s comp. Why does it insist on starting at the beginning when I clicked the stopwatch with the playhead at 4s and added a closing keyframe at 5s? BTW I noticed that I have a square keyframe indicator on the timeline rather than the diamond marker I see on other effects (Transform/Opacity, etc.)..?

Well, keyframing the wave type will of course not do anything. You have to keyframe Amplitude/ Height. For the keyframe shapes I would suggest you actualyl refer to the online help on what they mean. In your case it's only logical that switching different wave types would result in hold keyframes for a hard, abrupt transition. Again, please read the help. Many things in AE simply cannot be understood intuitively and blindly poking around or following "bad" tutorials won't get you anywhere.
