Effects in 3D Edit comp not displaying in Output

I'm attempting to add a VR effect to a 360º video using the VR Comp Editor.

When I click the button "Add 2D Effect" and add an effect, it shows up in the Output Comp.

When I click "Add 3D Effect" and add an effect, any changes I make do not affect what is shown in the output comp.

I double clicked into the "VR Conversion" comp to try to troubleshoot and I found that all the layered comps appeared to be working except for the the 3D ones, which just displayed a checkerboard transparency.

As far as I can tell, the VR tools works by creating duplicates of your master comp with camera pointing in the different directions.  They are then stiched together in the output comp.

If you make changes in the Master comp, you need to use the VR Comp Editor's button marked "Open Output Render" to switch to the output comp.  Clicking this button actually runs a script to refresh the comp copies.

If you just switch over to the output comp, it's not refreshing, which is why I think you're not seeing changes.

Yes. This is helpful. After playing around a bit I've found that the VR editor is good for something things and not others. With the way it splits up the comps, it makes it difficult to mask anything when in the editor, but I can do that beforehand, which is my solution.

We need a lot more information. Workflow details. Embedded screenshots showing the modified properties of the problem layers. System, OS, and AE version details. If you are following a tutorial we also need a link to the tutorial.
