Extreme lag during preview & exported projects

Hi, when I try to preview my project and watch back what I've edited the preview is extremely laggy and choppy. And oddly enough when I export my project the video that was exported is also extremely laggy and looks just like the preview. I've never seen this before and can't find a way to fix it. I'd love any suggestions, thanks!

What are your complete system specifications?

Try previewing your Composition at Quarter Resolution and skipping frames.

Try rendering a low resolution movie file with your full resolution movie file for viewing outside of After Effects. We can add additional Output Modules in the Render Queue. The first could be High Quality while the second is custom H264 5 Mpbs with the frame size reduced by half or quarter.
