How can I adjust the Fade Up Words preset to match the speed of words spoken if the speed is inconsistent for every word? That means some words may have appeared when they shouldn’t because they weren’t spoken yet and some words may haven’t appeared when they should.

Go to the Advanced Settings of the Range Selector.
The default setting for Units is Percentage, change it to Index.
You can now animate the position of the range selector to better follow the spoken words.

I believe that for Fade Up by Word you would animate the Start property of the range selector. The word should appear at the end of every word.

You would animate the value increasing with each work spoken.
