Feature suggestions - Adobe After Effects

Im sure there are thousands of suggestions posted, and here's a few from me to the development team - for After Effects.

Animation curves

I believe a keyframe only need two options for the trajectory to give the user full control: linear or spline. For spline there need to be handles possible to drag and with possible snapping. Today there is this possibility for position if you use the separate dimensions command. This almost works, but we miss the importance of having the program to help us aligning the dimensions - to avoid uneven movement. I really miss the option of using spline handles to get control over animations.

Stroke plugin

Misses an offset parameter

Lock layer

The lock layer option could be active only in the composition view.

Brush drawing

Im having trouble using this since I need to draw in the composition window to see the other layers.

Best regards to you.

If you show all keyframes in Preferences, you can edit a motion path using the Pen tool. You can even do the same with effects with motion paths if you open the layer in the Layer panel and choose the Effect. Check out this tutorial:

And this example of editing a motion path in the Layer Panel.

The way to brush with a comp in view is to Pre-compose all the layers you want to see (may require duplicating), then open the pre-comp in the Layer Panel and paint away. When you are done, you can select the source layer in the timeline, select paint on transparent, then delete all of the duplicate layers in the Pre-comp. I do it all the time. It's kind of funky, but it works.

Hi @sjurgust,

Thanks very much for these ideas! Please take a look at the guide for submitting a feature request here; specifically, note that each request should be submitted separately so that votes and conversations can be focused on specific ideas. We really do read and evaluate every request, but we aren't able to gauge interest or effectively communicate on posts that contain multiple separate requests. With that said, I've moved this post out of the Ideas section into Discussions.

Thanks again and looking forward to further discussing these ideas,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team
