I am a first time user of After Effects and need help with getting the start and end frequencies right for a song, I know it's different for each song, but I don't how to find out what they are for the song I want to use.

so here's what I've done for the audio spectrum

And it is just distorted when I preview it, is there any way to find what the start/end frequency?

As Dave said - nothing to do with AE. Even that thing with different frequencies isn't entirely correct, as nothing would stop you from normalizing and mastering your audio files to a same standard, be that just for the purpose of creating "bumped" duplicates of the actual audio that may sound terrible, but produce a nice spectrum. Again, nothing of that has to do with AE. It's all the magic of audio processing.

Ik, but I don't know why it sounds distorted and not normal.

Get to know Adobe Audition, a real audio application that's far better with precise details of audio than AE will ever be.
