Fine tuning (not refine edge) rotoscoping

I've been learning the ins and outs of rotoscoping but one thing I haven't been able to figure out is how to really clean up the alpha channel created by the rotoscoping. It seems to me that, after the alpha has been created, I should be able to go in with the paintbrush and "pretty it up". Things like editing the opacity of certain areas created by the Refine Edge tool, or painting in or out areas that the roto brush didn't do a great job on, etc. It seems that when I paint on the alpha, it's also painting on all of the other channels as well, so anything that I add is actually added to the layer, not just the alpha. Is there no way to do this or am I just missing something?

The Alpha in AE is always associated with the RGB info and the latter is not automatically substituted for a "neutral" fill color like you can do in more specialized rotoscoping tools. And that's basically the answer: Even if you combine all tools like Rotobrush, Refine Edges, mask tracking, conventional tracking and paint tools AE is sort of a 20 % version of Silhouette Roto or similar features in Nuke or flame. Point in case: There are simply limits to how far you can take this in AE and more complex tasks will inevitably require you to explore other options.
