Font drammatically changes when switch to Andvanced 3D

Excuse moi… What the hell is that?! It’s the first time in 15 years in After Effects I’ve had this:

Absolutely nothing special here. A fresh project with one video precomped, tracked, camera and text added. That is all. I cannot use Advanced 3D today because it messes up my font.

  • Tried resetting AE preferences with Ctrl+Shift+Alt on load.
  • Tried resetting font preferences, choose other fonts.
  • Tried changing Advanced 3D preferences.

AE 26.0.0, 14700K, 4080, 64 Gb of ram

Here’s a simple illustration of this bug everyone can reproduce:

While the Text Layer is selected, use Layer > Create > Create Shape and then use the resulting Shape Layer while working with 3D.  Hide the original, editable Text Layer, but keep it in case you need to make edits to the text later.

    Hi, @Warren Heaton

What if I don’t need text in shapes? I need it customizable at every stage of my workflow.

I posted a better workaround below.

    Thanks for reaching out, Andrew.

Looks like the font is being extruded when you switch to the Advanced 3D renderer. It is visible only in Advanced 3D because Classic 3D does not support extrusion. But it is difficult to say without looking at the project. Do you mind sharing your project for testing?

Looking forward to your response. Moving this thread from Bugs to Questions for troubleshooting.

    Thanks,

    Nishu

    Hi, @Nishu Kushwaha

While my post was being approved and posted I found the cause and the solution.

It turns out Advanced 3D and Cinema 4D renderers (but not Classic 3D) start acting weird like this with fonts when a font is less than 1,5 pt in size. It is easy to check, so be my guest. How did it happen on the other hand? I was trying to track some text to the camera movement. I have a 4K footage sent to AE via Dynamic link from Premiere (“replace with AE composition”), inside of AE I also precomposed the video and tracked the camera. When I selected the needed tracking points and created text and camera, AE for an unknown reason reduced the size of the text to 1,2 pt while increasing the scale to several thousand. I do not know the reason for it to do so, but I did several tests and also tracked several clips yesterday and every time the font size was less than 2 with this obvious font bug. I think Adobe should investigate why this happens because I’ve never had this bug in my life in the precious versions, it must be 26.0.0 specific.

And making the text size bigger is a workaround for those who has it too.

Not certain if this is the same cause-issue but it’s supposed to have been fixed in the Jan-2026 update - more info here -
Fixed issues in After Effects versions 17.x and later
