Question

Footage duration will not update even with clear cache and reload

I have an mp4 footage file that was originally 1 second in duration.

I created a new version that is 4 seconds in duration.

No matter what I do, the duration of the footage will not update in After Effects to reflect the new duration.

I have deleted the footage from the project, cleared all cache, closed and reopened After Effects, cleared cache again, re-imported the footage... still showing 1 second.

Yes, I have confirmed in the Finder and other applications that the file is indeed updated and 4 seconds in duration.

When I change the filename and import the footage, it is the correct length.

But as soon as I change it back to the name I would like it to be (and there's no reason I shouldn't be able to use)... AE believes that the footage is 1 second again... even though it knew that it was 4 seconds before the name change.

So there seems to be some persistent cache that I the user am not able to clear.

Any ideas?

If File > Reload Footage is not working, then try File > Replace Fotoage> File and replace the clip with itself.

Tried it. Didn't work. Thanks anyway.

Hi 🙂

Maybe you could precompose the footage as container and then import the new video with the 4 sec length and a different name and replace it within that container. As I read the footaage has the right lenght as soon as you import it with a different name, right? Would it be possible to just replace your original layer source with the new one using alt+drag?

This is a workaround. I'm hoping to get the software to behave as expected.

Of course, I do as well, but at the moment it doesn't and I was just trying to help you with an alternate solution to solve the problem fast.

Check the footage interpretation.

First thing I did (and fifth and seventh).

I re-exported the clip in its longer form and somehow AE saw the newer modification time and finally updated it (though the file was identical to the one it wasn't respecting).

I hate workarounds instead of solutions... but I've got stuff to do.

Hopefully Adobe fixes it at some point.
