Footage Not Rendering

Hello Adobe Gurus,

 

I am attempting to work in Adobe After Effects for the first time, but I am running into a problem. I'm attempting to follow along withe built-in tutorial, but the footage is not rendering in my preview window (see first screenshot). Assuming this was an issue with the rendering, I changed it from Mercury GPU Accelation (OpenCL) to Mercury Software Only, and now my preview window is just a white screen (see second screenshot). Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

 

My specs:

16 GB DDR3 RAM

AMD A8-7600 Radeon R7

AMD Radeon(TM) R7 Graphics

Your screenshots do not make any sense:

There is no footage in the comp, no text layer, nothing.

 

Please explain your workflow and point us to the tutorial you are following. I don't see anything that is generating the characters in the second screenshot. The only thing that makes sense is that there is a frame hanging in the cache which could be deleted by purging everything by using the Edit menu.
