Question

Frame by Frame Animation - position changes on previous keyframes

Having a situation where I'm creating a simple keyframe by keyframe animation, creating a unique position on every frame of a text layer. I'm basically trying to make a new layer follow another layer's content very specifically, pixel by pixel. When I go back to previous frames, the position that was initially set on the text layer has changed. I've tried changing Keyframe interpolation to Linear, but continue to experience this issue.

I'm using After Effects CC 2018. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

    ScottS,

Can't you just copy and past Position keyframes from Layer 1 to Layer 2, then offset the position of Layer 2 in the Timeline to offset the time? Sorry if I am not understanding your intended animation, but let me know if that helps you.

    Regards,
    Kevin

Layer 1 is a background video sized 100% to the comp and Layer 2 is a text layer. Think of Layer 1 as a blank billboard that is filmed by a moving vehicle driving down the road. Layer 2 is text that is to appear on that billboard. In order to look realistic, it needs to move position (plus scale, opacity and rotation) as the vehicle "drives down the road" (keyframe by keyframe) - so it remains centered on the billboard.

The position is set on the first keyframe of the text layer - say at X: 940 px; Y: 560 px. At the second keyframe, it is adjusted to X: 942 px; Y: 564 px. At the third keyframe, it is adjusted to X: 947 px, Y: 569 px. After setting multiple successive keyframe positions, I go back to the first keyframe and it has changed from X: 940 px; y: 560 px to different values - so it's no longer in the original position that was set.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Two techniques you need to use:

    • Precomposition to make the billboard.
    • Motion tracking using Mocha.
