Grey background in full screen playback

Why is there a grey background/border in full screen playback? Why is there (still!) no option to change this to black?

I find it frustrating that there's a grey background or border during full-screen playback, and I can't believe there's still no option to change it to black. It really affects the viewing experience, and I wish they would address this issue already.
