Question

Halftone dot wave

I am trying to find out if there is a way to recreate this in After Effects so I can add some subtle animation to it and make it ripple like a wave. I need the halftone dots to be mapped on to a surface that I can displace to create the wave effect.

I have been attempting to do this using Trapcode Form, but no luck. I can’t get the dots to map correctly. They always orient toward the camera and I want the dots to seem like they are mapped onto the surface of the wave.

Any help to get me pointed in the right direction would be much appreciated.

You can try to use good old Card Dance. It will just take some experimentaion to get the underlying gradient maps for the deformation and dot scaling to work as you want. Otherwise pretty much any 3D deformation-based tool like Trapcode Mir, Freeform, BorisFX Layer Deformer or even Element 3D could potentially take care of such a scenario.
