Help with hand drawn jittery effect

Hi there,

If anyone can help i'd really appreciate it.

I'm trying to recreate the jittery style found in the credits at the end of this video. Can anyone help - I'm guessing it's some sort of turbulence displace effect, but whenever I try it doesn't have that jittery look I am after. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPVTFB09sGA

The frames are just cycling through three different states, which could be anything from drawing three different versions and repeating them endlessly with time-remapping on the resulting pre-comp or importing them as a looping sequence and so on. I can't see any Turbulent Displace there.
