hey.  I'm experimenting with rotoscoping for the first time.  I know there's a little green in it, but my question is - how come i'm only seeing a small portion (square) of the full video size?  I'm sure this is a Newbie display question so thanks in advance 🙂

Working on it.  Not sure.  Just getting into After Effects so I need to understand the basic premise that i'm missing here.  I checked the comp settings panel, but didn't see where to see the size of the media in the project as it gave me no "view properties" option so I looked to the panel on the right.  I DO understand that the Roto Brush tool works in the footage panel and not in composition, but i'd like to see the full rotoscoped image within the composition panel.  As for the Region of Interest tool, i'm not sure.  Can you explain more fully?

Welcome to After Effects. So the media resolution can be found in finder or pretty much anywhere so you don't need to specifically find the view properties right click option. Knowing your media resolution is going to be very important moving forward. So the quick and dirty option would be to select the video layer you roto'd and right click it. Go to transform -> fit to comp width or height. Basically just scale the footage down or make the comp size larger.

There could be a couple of things causing the issue. First, your composition size may not match your media size when at 100% scale. To check this, press Ctrl or Command + K to open the comp settings panel. You can also check the size of the media in the project panel or by right-clicking and selecting "view properties." When using the Roto Brush tool, it only works inside the footage panel and not the composition panel. Additionally, the tool in your image is the Region of Interest tool, which is used as a preview and sometimes as a cropping tool, but not in your case.
