Hide *SOME* layer controls

Is there a way to selectively hide layer controls? I have a lot of layers and I really don't like seeing the handle/outline box for EVERY. SINGLE. LAYER, but I do want to see the outline for the null layers.  Right now it seems like in View Options you can either hide everything or show everything, so my options are see nothing or have a cluttered viewport (see image or what I see vs what I want to see)

What are my options?
