How can I create Bar Chart Race animations similar to VGraphs in After Effects?

Hi everyone,

For the past few years, I’ve been trying to figure out how the YouTube channel VGraphs creates its Bar Chart Race animations.

Their charts have a very distinctive and polished style. Some of the details that make their animations look different from typical Bar Chart Races are:

  • The bars themselves are relatively short in width compared to the circular images attached to the ends of the bars.
  • The bars have a black stroke/outline.
  • The font used for the numbers and labels has a distinctive appearance and is somewhat bold.
  • When the bars move or scroll vertically, the circular images attached to the ends of the bars appear to rotate, almost like a coin flipping from one side to the other.
  • Overall, the animation is much more sophisticated than a standard Bar Chart Race.

I’m a complete beginner when it comes to After Effects. In fact, I have never used After Effects before.

I normally create basic Bar Chart Race animations using Flourish Studio, but I don’t know how to create them with the same visual style and animations used by VGraphs.

I came across a discussion on a forum where someone suggested that VGraphs’ animations may have been created using Adobe After Effects, so I wanted to ask here:

Would it be very difficult for a complete beginner to create Bar Chart Race animations with a style similar to VGraphs using After Effects?

Is this something that can realistically be done in After Effects, or would I need additional software, plugins, scripts, or other tools?

If anyone has experience creating this type of animation, I would really appreciate some guidance on where I should start and what techniques I should learn.

Thank you very much!

    Hi, thanks for reaching out.

Honest answer: yes, this can be done in After Effects, but it's a bit of a learning curve for a complete beginner. Bar chart races involve animating many data points over time with precise position/value changes. You'll have the upper hand if you're familiar with expressions. Doable in AE, but not straightforward. Here's a series of tutorials I found on YouTube: https://adobe.ly/4q8RMGk

Hope it helps. Feel free to reach out.

    Thanks,
