Question

How do I combine two compositions that have different background colours

This is my first time using adobe after effects, I created two seperate projects, one with a black backgound an one with a white. When ever I import my second project into the first one, or upload both compositions into premiere pro they both turn black. I am using contrasting designs so its important that second composition keeps its white background.

Setting the background color of a composition does not add pixels or color to the composition. The only reason to change the comp background color is to add a color tint to the edges of an alpha channel when you export visually lossless with alpha and Pre-multiplied colors. The likelihood that you will ever need to do that is very small. Almost all codecs (video formats) will ignore the background color of the composition and render transparency as black.

If you want a solid color background you need to add pixels. There are two ways to do that. The first is to add a colored (white in your case) solid. The second is to double-click the Rectangle shape layer tool and add a comp-sized shape layer with a fill to the timeline.

I hope this helps. There are lots of people that mistakenly think changing the background color of the comp will add color to the comp. It only does if you render with a very narrow set of render options.

Thank you! I added a rectangle and layered it in the back and it worked perfectly.
